For the 2012 model year, the Subaru Impreza is all-new, redesigned from the
ground up to be even more spacious, aerodynamic and fuel-efficient than it
already is. And like all Subarus, it's equipped with the superior Symmetrical
All-Wheel Drive system.
Debuted at the 2011 New York Auto Show, the Impreza showed
off its new bodylines, reminiscent of its bigger brother, the Legacy. But just
because it looks bigger doesn't mean it has gained anything in the waistline.
The Impreza maintains its compact physique, in both four-door and five-door body
styles, with length and width parameters unchanged, but benefits from an
additional inch of wheelbase for more interior room and a more comfortable,
stable ride, especially at freeway speeds. It also weighs more than 100 pounds
less for 2012, for greater acceleration, agility and fuel economy.
Inside, redesigned door panels result in increased shoulder and hip room.
More glass all around, combined with a lowered instrument panel, helps improve
visibility from the cabin. The 2012 Impreza front door openings are nearly five
inches wider, the result of the car's redesigned A-pillars. The real
beneficiaries of the redesign are the rear-seat passengers who will experience
two extra inches of rear legroom. In the five-door version, total cargo volume
with rear seats folded is nearly 50 cubic feet, an impressive number for a
compact car.
One of the main focuses for the Impreza redesign was improved fuel economy.
Subaru engineers prioritized aerodynamics, and the result is a car that cuts
through the wind with far more efficiency than the previous generation. In
addition to its slippery lines, the 2012 Impreza also benefits from an all-new,
more fuel-efficient SUBARU BOXER® engine.
The new DOHC 2.0-liter BOXER four-cylinder gains an extra overhead cam over
the outgoing single overhead cam 2.5-liter, and incorporates Variable Valve
Timing and a smaller cylinder bore size for better fuel efficiency. The result
is an engine that produces 148 hp and 145 lb/ft of torque and, when coupled with
a second-generation Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable
transmission (CVT), returns 27 mpg city/36 mpg highway, a nearly 30 percent
increase over previous models (a five-speed manual is also available). Those
numbers make the Impreza the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive car in America;
it's even more fuel-efficient than most two-wheel drive cars.
Of course, no Impreza would be complete without its ability to put a smile
on your face when the road goes twisted. With revised struts and springs, new
bushings, reinforced strut towers and a roof brace above the B-pillar, the 2012
Impreza improves its stiffness by 25 percent, making for a more agile back road
carver.
The 2012 Impreza will be available in a base, Premium, Sport Premium,
Limited and Sport Limited models. A healthy list of standard equipment includes
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, four-wheel disc antilock brakes with Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist and Vehicle Dynamics Control,
which combines electronic stability control and traction control functions. A
more refined and comfortable cabin features standard 60/40-split folding rear
seats, stereo with CD and MP3 capability, power locks, windows and mirrors, A/C,
remote keyless entry, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and seven airbags, among
the highlights.
Moving up the model line brings additional standard features that include a
rear stabilizer bar for more precise handling, cruise control,
Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming, a voice and
touchscreen controlled navigation system with iTunes® tagging, XM
Satellite Radio, SMS text messaging and an SD Card reader, a six-speaker audio
system with USB audio input, a power moonroof and 17-inch wheels. Top-line
Limited models feature standard leather seats, an All-Weather Package (available
on Premium models) with heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a
windshield wiper de-icer, chrome exterior accents, alloy wheels, foglamps,
automatic climate control and an HD Radio™ tuner.
The Impreza Sport Premium five-door wagon includes roof rails, unique
17-inch wheels, foglights, body-colored rocker panels and a new grille
insert.
The compact car segment is more competitive now than ever before but, at
the same time, Subaru as an automotive brand is more successful now than ever
before. Consider it a testament to Subaru's undying commitment to building
practical, reliable, affordable and fun-to-drive cars that always offer the
superior performance of all-wheel drive. It's a combination that's sure to make
the 2012 Impreza another huge Subaru success. The 2012 Impreza begins arriving
at dealerships this fall.
