Subaru is ringing in the fifth generation of the ever-popular Forester for the 2019 model year with some exciting improvements. It looks sportier and tougher with exterior updates and additional cladding, and there's more standard equipment than ever. Build options have been streamlined with the discontinuation of the manual transmission and turbo engine, both due to low popularity; all Foresters feature a 2.5-liter 182 horsepower engine with a Lineartronic CVT. Fuel economy is rated by the EPA at 33 highway/26 city.

Because it's the ideal winter vehicle, the Forester has always been a great seller in New England and other places with cold, snowy winters. With all-wheel drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and specific X-MODE settings (on most trims) for snow, mud, and dirt, it takes on inclement weather with confident ability, and available heated steering wheel and seats make for toasty travel. The available trims are the Base, Premium, Sport (new for 2019), Limited, and Touring. The Sport and Touring trims feature manual mode on the CVT with wheel-mounted shifters.

The 2019 Subaru Forester has safety merits inside and out to protect occupants both passively and actively. The high-strength steel used in the body construction offers greater occupant protection, and the cabin is packed with airbags. Active safety technologies in the standard EyeSight Driver Assist suite (adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, emergency braking, and more) decrease the likelihood of collision. A rear-view camera is also included on every Forester; blind-spot monitor and high-beam assist are available or included, depending on the trim. On the Limited trim, DriverFocus comes standard as a safety feature. It uses infrared facial recognition to determine whether the driver is drowsy or distracted; if so, it sounds an alert and then connects with a live operator if the driver does not respond.

The standard STARLINK multimedia system uses either a 6.5-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, depending on trim level, to manage audio, communication, phone use, and more. There are up to five USB ports in the Forester, also depending on the trim, and all but the base come equipped with an Internet hotspot and are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Passenger Comfort/Cargo Space
The spacious Forester is the perfect transportation for active people and their stuff - and their dogs, too! There is easy-clean PVC material in the ample cargo area and on the backs of the front-row seats. Folding the rear seats forward brings the cargo area to over 35 cubic feet, and the rear gate has been improved to open more widely than before. Roof rails are standard on most trims and can be opted for on the base trims.
