2021 Subaru Legacy in RI

Although so many car buyers are clamoring for crossovers these days, the sedan definitely has its loyal following. The 2021 Subaru Legacy is one of the reasons why people love their four-doors as much as ever. It’s appointed with quite a few attractive features at a great price. For model year ‘21, this includes some fine standard equipment: a rear-seat reminder (so that small children and pets aren’t left behind), front and rear passenger seatbelt warnings, steering-adaptive LED headlights, and, as always, standard all-wheel drive.

Trims, Powertrain and Fuel Economy

There are six Legacy trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT. All of these but the Limited XT and Touring XT have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 182 hp and 176 lb.-ft. of torque. The XT variations get a bit more zest from their turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder (260 hp and 277 lb.-ft. of torque). Both engines work with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with eight-speed manual shift mode. According to the EPA, 2021 Legacy models with the smaller four-cylinder achieve 27 mpg around town and 35 mpg on the highway, while the turbocharged XT versions return 24 city/32 highway.

Comfort and Convenience

The Base trim gets 17-inch wheels, LED steering-responsive headlights, a 60/40 split-folding back seat, dual front USB ports, and a backup camera. The Premium is upgraded with alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, automatic climate control with two zones, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and dual rear USB charging ports. LED fog lights, keyless entry, keyless ignition, and a sunroof are available. The Sport has LED fog lights and keyless entry and ignition as standard equipment along with trim-specific 18-inch black-painted wheels, racier styling elements, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and sport cloth upholstery with contrasting red interior stitching.

The Limited drops those aesthetic enhancements but retains the convenience features and gets driver’s seat memory, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, heated rear outboard seats, and genuine leather seats. It’s also eligible for a heated steering wheel and sunroof. While the Limited XT simply adds the more powerful turbocharged engine and sunroof, the Touring XT spoils its occupants with ventilated front seats and upgraded Nappa leather upholstery.

Safety and Technology

All versions of the ‘21 Legacy are equipped with the Subaru EyeSight package of active safety aids: adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane keep assist. As mentioned in the intro, adaptive high beams and a rear-seat reminder are also included. The Premium and Sport are eligible for the available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Sport can also have reverse automatic braking added as an option. The Limited receives each of these as standard features, and a driver attention warning system is optional. The two XT versions include all of these available safety technologies, and the Touring XT loads up with a 180-degree front-view monitor.

The Base trim has a well-equipped infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite and HD radio, and a four-speaker sound system. The Premium gets some upgrades: an infotainment system with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system. Integrated navigation is available. The navigation unit remains optional with the Limited, but it gets a deluxe 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system as standard. The navigation system is standard issue on the XT trims.
