2020 Subaru BRZ in RI

The Subaru BRZ is a something of a specialty vehicle, suiting those who love to drive and aren't looking for the all-wheel drive that all of the other Subaru models get as standard fare. Thanks to a reasonable base MSRP of $28,845, you won't have to break the bank to sink into the comfortable sports seats of this rear-wheel-drive four-seater and enjoy fun torque and handling. For the new model year, the Japanese automaker has simplified its offerings to just the base Limited and more performance-tuned tS trims.

Both trims get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (205 horsepower and 156 pounds-feet of torque) with the standard six-speed manual transmission. If you prefer to let the car do its own shifting, go for the Limited and choose the optional six-speed automatic (with this transmission the total system output slips a tad to 200 hp and 151 lb.-ft.). This slight power tradeoff allows for improved fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, versus the 20 city/27 highway with the stickshift.

Convenience, Comfort, and Technology

The Limited trim gets a rear spoiler, keyless entry and push-button ignition, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, and LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights. When you slip into the cockpit you'll notice the comfort and convenience of dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, fold-down rear seatbacks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a simulated leather dash with accented stitching, and Alcantara leather-trimmed upholstery. Infotainment is handled via a well-outfitted system with a 7-inch touchscreen, integrated navigation, voice recognition function, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio, an eight-speaker audio system, sport-look gauges with a 4.2-inch multi-functional display, and dual USB ports. The tS receives trim-specific side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter with red accented stitching, and track-inspired red leather seat bolsters.

Performance Attributes

A certain degree of performance is to be expected from any sport coupe. The Limited is ready for those curves in the road with its Torsen limited-slip rear differential, a sport-tuned four-wheel independent suspension, 17-inch black aluminum-alloy wheels, and high-performance summer tires. The optional Performance Package for this trim provides 18-inch STI aluminum-alloy wheels, Brembo performance brakes, and Sachs performance shock absorbers, all of which are standard on the tS. STI performance springs, which are also standard on the tS, can be added to the Limited a la carte. These stiffer springs provide tighter feel through the bends as well as lower the vehicle's ride height for less body roll and overall improved handling. A rear bumper diffuser can be added to either trim to help direct airflow while adding aesthetic detail. For smoother shifting and a sportier driving experience, you can elect the STI throw shifter.
