2021 Subaru Crosstrek in RI

Overview

The rugged and efficient Crosstrek, the smallest crossover in Subaru’s lineup, has been a strong seller since its 2013 debut. It has always presented a nice mix of qualities: a rugged build, road-gripping confidence in all kinds of weather, and generous standard equipment. It also has a fun yet confident look, like a lifted and trail-tough Impreza that’s waiting for the weekend so it can get a little muddy. As much as this vehicle has been loved and appreciated for those qualities – as well as an ongoing reputation for longevity – there’s a segment of Crosstrek enthusiasts wishing for a bit more horsepower. Well, those folks will be happy with that a highlight of this redesign is a stronger available engine: the 182-horsepower 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer currently in use on the Forester and Outback. Another change for this model year is the introduction of While there is a 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid (plug-in) as well, we’ll just discuss the conventional gasoline-only version on this page.

Trims, Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The four trims of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek are the Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. The first two get a 2.0-liter BOXER engine that makes 152 horsepower, and the higher two trims get the aforementioned upgrade, a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER. The sole transmission for the larger engine is an efficient Lineartronic CVT that keeps fuel efficiency around 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. While the Base and Premium can be ordered with the CVT, their default transmission is a six-speed manual – a rarity in today’s automotive market. Fuel economy numbers for the stickshift variant shift only slightly to an EPA-estimated 28 city/33 highway.

Standard Features by Trim

The Base ’21 Crosstrek gets the 2.0-liter BOXER engine, cloth seats, black exterior mirrors, automatic climate control, and the Starlink infotainment system with a 6.5-inch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a four-speaker audio system, and a USB port. Upgrades to the Premium include orange contrasting stitching on the upholstery, body-colored exterior mirrors, automatic on/off headlights, fog lights, SiriusXM satellite radio, two additional speakers, a Wi-Fi hotspot, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The all-new trim, the Sport, has a distinct look and personality with its unique wheel cladding, dark-grey wheels, a gunmetal-accented grille and side mirrors, and additional paint choices (Horizon Blue Pearl and Plasma Yellow Pearl). Inside, it gets StarTex water-repellent upholstery with yellow contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped shifter knob, and trim-specific yellow accents on the steering wheel and carpeted floor mats. In addition to the engine upgrade, it gets a drive mode selector with settings for snow, dirt, deep snow, and mud.

The Touring trim goes back to the standard Crosstrek appearance and is loaded with sought-after amenities, including a power driver’s seat, leather seats (with orange contrast stitching), a folding armrest for the back row, an 8-inch infotainment display, steering-responsive headlights, LED fog lights, and 18-inch black alloy wheels.

EyeSight Active Safety Features

The EyeSight Driver Assist technology package is standard on the Sport and Touring and optional on the Base and Premium. It bundles adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking and throttle management, and lane departure and sway warning. The two higher trims also get high beam assist. Blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic monitoring is standard on the Touring and available on the Premium and Sport.
