Overview

For those in search of a true-to-form lightweight sports car with razor-sharp handling and heart-pounding performance, the 2023 Subaru BRZ is hard to pass up. Unlike many of its rivals – like the Mini Cooper S, Volkswagen GTI, and Honda Civic Sport – the ’23 BRZ boasts an increasingly uncommon rear-wheel drive layout that deftly balances performance for truly dynamic driving. Not only that, but the ’23 BRZ has been engineered with driver comfort and convenience in mind; it can be ordered with heated front seats and suede/leather upholstery, as well as an assortment of active driving aids.

Trims, Performance, and Fuel Economy

A pair of trims is offered for the 2023 BRZ: Premium and Limited. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a standard fully synchronized six-speed manual transmission that controls the rear-wheel drivetrain. A six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters is optional. According to the EPA, both trims pull off an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the manual tranny, but with the automatic, they’re a bit more efficient, achieving 21 city/30 highway. Both trims also have a traction-enhancing Torsen limited-slip differential, which helps limit the amount of wheelspin with acceleration.

Signature Amenities

The base Premium receives LED headlights, keyless entry with push button ignition, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with red accents, a 12-volt power outlet, a pair of USB input ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch configurable LCD display screen with Normal, Sport, and Track drive modes, a digital odometer with a dual-mode trip function, and a fold-down rear seatback. Its 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a high-luster gray finish are wrapped in summer performance tires.

The Limited is even more compelling with its LED steering-responsive headlights (which move from left to right in line with the vehicle’s steering angle and speed), heated side mirrors, and leather and suede sport seats with red accents and contrast stitching. It gets Michelin Pilot 4 summer performance tires on 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a dark-gray matte-finish.

Advanced Safety Systems

Both trims are eligible for the Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite: advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane keep assist. Some additional available driving aids are automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking. Although blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert is offered for the Premium, it’s standard on the Limited.

Multimedia and Commuication

The Premium and Limited both come with the Subaru STARLINK 8.0-inch Multimedia Plus system which, as you might have guessed, is controlled using an 8-inch touchscreen or voice recognition. Its other main features are Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), SiriusXM satellite radio, and a sound system with eight speakers.
