2025 Subaru WRX

Subaru’s rally-minded sport sedan brings a lineup change for the 2025 model year: The new tS trim takes the top spot, while the TR and Base have been eliminated. Precision-engineered by the Subaru Tecnica International (STI) team, the tS gets electronically adjustable dampers for precise handling during cornering and acceleration, along with a Brembo performance braking system, and Recaro performance front seats.

Driving enthusiasts are relieved that the WRX still comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, staying true to its rally roots, while many of its peers only offer paddle shifters or dual-clutch transmissions. That said, an 8-speed performance transmission with paddle shifters is available on select trims. The WRX’s 2.4-liter Boxer engine cranks out 271 horsepower, with a maximum boost pressure of 12 psi. A track-tuned suspension and active torque vectoring are standard for superior cornering and control at high speeds. Subaru couples the WRX’s rally track-inspired engineering and design with the comforts, conveniences, and safety features drivers expect – even in a performance-focused car. Sporty touches like the flat-bottomed steering wheel and performance front seats complement upscale elements such as a leather-wrapped shift knob. Of course, no Subaru would be complete without symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD), and the automaker’s reputation for making the longest-lasting vehicles on the road adds to the WRX’s value.

Trims, Powertrains, and Performance

The 2025 WRX comes in four trim levels: Premium, Limited, GT, and the newest member of the WRX family, tS, which has replaced the discontinued TR. Every trim has the peppy turbocharged 2.4-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder Boxer engine that produces 271 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, with a 12 psi maximum boost pressure. The Premium, Limited, and tS powertrains come standard with a fully synchronized 6-speed manual transmission, while the GT receives a Subaru Performance Transmission, an automatic with 8-speed manual mode and paddle shifters, plus Subaru’s SI-DRIVE Engine Performance Management System and Variable Torque Distribution (VTD). While the Premium and Limited are eligible for this automatic transmission, the tS comes solely with the manual.

Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) is standard across the lineup, as are active torque vectoring and Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS), which provide enhanced cornering control. The GT and tS are equipped with a drive-mode selector, offering Comfort, Normal, and Sport modes, plus a tS-exclusive customizable drive mode. The manual-tranny WRX is EPA-rated to return 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway, which dips slightly to 18 city/25 highway with the automatic.

Standard Features

The Premium gets heated cloth-upholstered performance front seats that are manually adjustable and upholstered in cloth with red accent stitching. Its track-inspired components include a sport-tuned independent suspension, a quad-exhaust system with stainless-steel tailpipes, aluminum-alloy pedal covers, analog instruments and gauges with full-sweep needles, a trunk-mounted spoiler, front and rear under spoilers, a rear bumper with an integrated diffuser, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and flat-bottomed steering wheel with red stitching. It also has keyless access, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch LCD color vehicle function display, auto on/off LED headlights, LED fog lights, daytime running lights, push-button ignition, heated power side-view mirrors, USB charging and input ports, a 12-volt power outlet, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a dark-gray finish. The Limited raises the stakes with Ultrasuede upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support, a power-tilt/sliding glass moonroof, steering-responsive headlights, heated power side-view mirrors with integrated turn indicators, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels finished in black.

The GT is loaded with Recaro performance-design front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and electronically controlled suspension dampers. The tS does away with the moonroof to lower its weight but adds an STI-engineered sport-tuned independent suspension with electronically controlled dampers, Brembo performance brakes with six-piston front and dual-piston rear fixed calipers, and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a satin-gray finish.

Safety

Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology suite is installed on every WRX, offering advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, and lane departure and sway warning with lane keep assist. Subaru’s DriverFocus distraction mitigation system, designed to keep the driver’s eyes on the road, is also standard across the WRX lineup. The Premium includes high beam assist, brake assist, and a rear camera. The Limited adds blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The GT alone has Reverse Automatic Braking (available on the Limited). Subaru’s subscription-based STARLINK safety and security suite, which offers automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, enhanced roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery, diagnostic, security, and remote services, is available on all trims.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Premium gets the STARLINK Multimedia Plus infotainment system with an 11.6-inch LCD touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio and Travel Link, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone capabilities, HD Radio, and a sound system with six speakers. The rest of the lineup gets an enhanced system with the same components plus voice-activated navigation and a premium 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. While the Premium is not eligible for navigation, those who order that trim may add the audio upgrade as an option.
