2023 Subaru Solterra in Rhode Island
Overview
The 2023 Solterra is Subaru’s long-awaited fully electric crossover. This debuting EV is the first to be released by automaker and is assembled on the all-new e-Subaru Global Platform. As is the case with the rest of Subaru’s lineup of adventurous vehicles, the Solterra (which derives its name from the combination of “sun” and “earth” in Latin) will deliver on the outdoor chops that have come to define the brand, like standard all-wheel drive and high ground clearance (8.3 inches, to be precise). Not only that, but the Solterra even boasts 63.5 cubic feet of total cargo space, plenty of standard driving aids, and an interior that looks as if it came straight from the future.

Trims, Powertrain, and Performance
The all-electric Subaru Solterra is offered in three trims: Premium, Limited, and Touring. This AWD crossover has two electric motors that generate a combined 215 hp and 249 lb.-ft. of torque. As determined by the EPA, the Premium returns an estimated 94 MPGe in the city and 114 MPGe on the highway, whereas the Limited and Touring both achieve 93 MPGe/111 MPGe. This translates to 228 miles of single-charge driving with the Premium and 222 miles with the Limited and Touring.
The Solterra comes with a 6.6-kW onboard L2 charger, and when the battery is dead, it takes approximately 11 hours to fully recharge it using a 240-volt outlet. Also, thanks to the vehicle’s regenerative braking capability (which can be adjusted using the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel), the Solterra can gain an increment of charge on the road since it’s able to capture the kinetic energy formed during braking and store it in the battery.
Amenities by Trim Level
The Solterra Premium gets multi-beam LED headlights, a windshield wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors, keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, selectable drive modes (Normal, Eco, Power, and traction-enhancing X-Mode) a 60/40-split flat-folding second-row seatback, and a cargo-area underfloor storage tray. On the tech front, this trim receives a configurable 7-inch LCD gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a voice-activated vehicle control system (Intelligent Assistant), five USB ports (one Type-A and four Type-C), and an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system.
The Limited gains several features of note. Its exterior shows off LED fog lights, power-folding side mirrors with turn-signal indicators and entry illumination, roof rails, a split-design roof spoiler with aerodynamic fins, a power liftgate with height memory, and Digital Key. Inside, you’ll find a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated outboard second-row seats, synthetic-leather upholstery (StarTex), a HomeLink universal garage door opener, a wireless phone charger, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a high-end 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The Touring is loaded, getting a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a retractable cargo-area cover.
EyeSight Driver Assist Technology
All trims are outfitted with the Subaru EyeSight suite of driver-assistive technologies. The list includes a pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert and prevention, lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Grip Control is standard as well; this technology reacts to specific road characteristics to improve traction and handling. Advanced park assist and a panoramic view monitor are added to the Limited and Touring.
