2025 Subaru Outback

Overview
Few vehicles have helped define an automotive brand like the Outback has for Subaru. This rugged crossover straddles the line between a comfortable and capable car and a versatile wagon, while its robust all-wheel-drive system and exceptional safety ratings are always there for the driver’s confidence.
Subaru has made the 2025 Outback more compelling to keep it at the top of the pack. Most notably, they have packed more value into the popular Limited trim, giving it additional standard equipment, highlighted by a power moonroof and a heated steering wheel. Meanwhile, the Outback continues to ace safety testing. The 2025 edition received a five-star overall rating - the highest possible – from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Trims and Powertrains
The Outback trim range is extensive, with these nine choices: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited, Limited XT, Touring, and Touring XT. Most versions have a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, while the XT and Wilderness variants receive a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder powerplant. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) with eight-speed manual-mode paddle shifters manages the standard all-wheel drivetrain.
The base 2.5-liter engine is EPA-rated for 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Fuel economy changes to 22 mpg around town and 29 mpg on the open road (21 city/26 highway for the Wilderness). With the proper equipment for towing, an Outback with the base engine can pull up to 2,700 pounds, which increases to 3,500 with the XT engine. Cargo capacity ranges from 32.6 cubic feet behind the second row to 75.6 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded flat.
Standard Features
The Outback Base keeps things simple yet comfortable with fabric upholstery, single-zone automatic climate control, LED steering-responsive headlights with auto on/off and wiper-linked functionality, LED fog lights, roof rails, keyless entry, a USB port, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Premium is upgraded with dual-zone automatic climate control, the All-Weather Package (heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer), a ten-way power driver's seat, rear privacy glass, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle, additional USB ports (including two in the second row), and a cargo cover. The Onyx Edition adds enhanced all-wheel-drive, proximity keyless entry, a power moonroof, StarTex water-repellent upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, push-button ignition, and 18-inch wheels. The Onyx Edition XT is differentiated by the stronger engine plus an eight-way power front passenger seat, heated outboard rear seats, and a full-sized spare tire.
The Wilderness incorporates most of the Onyx Edition XT’s equipment but gives the Outback a more ruggedized treatment thanks to an advanced all-wheel-drivetrain, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels. This trim also comes with unique exterior treatments, hexagonal LED fog lights, and ladder-style roof rails. The Limited takes the Outback upmarket, starting with the Premium’s equipment roster and adding a power moonroof, leather upholstery, a 12-way power driver's seat with memory and adjustable thigh support, an eight-way power front passenger seat, heated outboard rear seats, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, an automatic tilt-down passenger-side mirror, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 18-inch wheels. The Limited XT is equipped similarly, plus it also has the turbo engine. The Touring and Touring XT offer the highest level of comfort with Nappa-leather upholstery, a power moonroof, a heated steering wheel with upgraded leather wrapping, ventilated front seats, and automatic power-folding side mirrors.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
Subaru EyeSight is standard with every 2025 Outback. This collection of advanced driver aids includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure and sway warning with lane departure prevention, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and automatic emergency steering are optional for the Premium and standard on the higher trims. Reverse automatic braking is included with the Onyx and above (optional on the Wilderness). The Touring, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT get a driver distraction mitigation system. A 180-degree front-view monitor is standard on the Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, and Touring XT. Every trim gets anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, a rearview monitor, and a full complement of airbags.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A dual 7-inch multimedia screen arrangement is infotainment central in the Outback Base. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker sound system support the platform. The higher trims are upgraded to an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and an additional pair of speakers. A 12-speaker Harman Kardon system is found in the Onyx and above. The Limited, Touring, Limited XT, and Touring XT come with navigation, which is optional on the Premium and Wilderness. Except for the Outback Base, all trims have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot and Subaru connected services (for emergency help, remote vehicle access, and other services).
