Overview

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most sought-after casual adventure vehicles out there. It earns top marks for weekend getaways, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and versatile roof rack that can accommodate a couple of kayaks, bicycles, snowboards, paddleboards, or whatever recreational equipment you need to take with you. Plus, it’s a great choice for everyday driving since it achieves excellent fuel economy and handles well in tight urban spaces.

Mechanical Specs and Fuel Economy

The ’22 Crosstrek is a five-passenger AWD compact crossover that’s offered in four trims: Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. The Base and Premium have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 152 hp and is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Sport and Limited employ a zestier 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (182 hp) with a continuously variable transmission (CVT); this powertrain is optional on the Base and Premium. The EPA states that the Base and Premium with the six-speed manual gearbox achieve an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway; with the CVT, that rises to 28 city/33 highway. The Sport and Limited drop one mpg in the city but gain one on the highway. Every trim can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Standard Features

Besides standard AWD, the Base gets raised roof rails, a USB data port, automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, and a 60/40-split flat-folding seatback. The Premium ramps things up with automatic headlights, heated front seats, fog lights, a windshield wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, orange contrast stitching on the cloth upholstery, an additional USB data port, a rear cargo tray, and a retractable and removable cargo-area cover. A few more upscale amenities are available, such as a moonroof, keyless entry, a PIN-code access pad, push-button start, a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and steering-wheel paddle shifters.

The Sport inherits the keyless entry, PIN-code pad, push-button ignition, paddle shifters, and leather-wrapped shift knob as standard equipment, but the moonroof remains optional. In addition to its more athletic presence, the Sport gains side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, water-repellent upholstery with yellow contrast stitching, and dual rear USB charging ports. The top-of-the-range Limited loses the more daring design of the Sport, but it adds LED steering-responsive headlights, LED fog lights, a power driver’s seat, leather upholstery with orange contrast stitching, a 6.3-inch color multifunction display, and a folding rear-seat armrest with two cupholders.

Safety and Technology

The ’22 Crosstrek is all about safety. On top of a healthy supply of airbags and standard all-wheel drive, the Base and Premium are eligible for Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This confidence-boosting suite includes a pre-collision braking system, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure and sway warning, and advanced adaptive cruise control. EyeSight comes standard on the Sport and Limited. The Premium and Sport also qualify for the available blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, which are standard in the Limited along with automatic high beams.

The STARLINK infotainment system in the Base consists of a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone connectivity, and a sound system with four speakers. The Premium and Sport move up to the more advanced STARLINK Plus, which has the same-sized touchscreen but adds SiriusXM satellite radio, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system. Buyers of the Sport can choose to upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen while adding voice recognition and HD radio; this version is standard on the Limited. The Limited is the only trim that can be ordered with navigation and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
