Overview
The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is a good-looking, capable, and compact crossover that boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Outdoorsy people (especially those living in snowy climates) who are always on the go appreciate its off-road readiness, tough-clad appearance, and versatility in carrying gear inside and outside the vehicle. The Crosstrek's trim options are 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, and 2.0i Limited, all of which are equipped with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Other standard features on all levels include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a rear-view camera, vehicle dynamics control, and brake assist.

The Crosstrek's four-cylinder Boxer engine makes 152 horsepower, and the EPA rates fuel economy at 27 city/33 highway (for Crosstreks with continuously variable transmission). Driving purists will be happy to know that they can get the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium with the 6-speed manual transmission; the top-level 2.0i Limited comes with the Lineartronic CVT with paddle shifters. Other standard amenities on the highest trim include automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels, leather trim on the seats, automatic transmission handle, and steering wheel.

Safety and Technology

Subaru has long earned praise for the safety factor of its vehicles, and the Crosstrek is no different. It contains seven airbags (including a driver's knee airbag) and comes standard with a rear-view camera, traction and dynamics control, and whiplash-protection headrests for all five passengers. X-Mode with hill descent control and the EyeSight suite of active safety technology are available on cars equipped with CVT (standard on the highest trim). EyeSight combines adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert/lane keep assist, and pre-collision automatic braking to significantly limit the likelihood of a crash. Other available safety amenities are steering-responsive headlights and automatic high-beam assist.

The STARLINK multimedia system, which integrates smartphone functions (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), audio entertainment, Bluetooth usage and more comes standard on all Crosstreks, with a 6.5-inch touchscreen that is upgraded to 8 inches on the Limited trim. The Premium and Limited trims are outfitted with 4G LET WiFi capability, and there's a USB port in the cabin. A navigation system is an option on the Limited trim.

Passenger Comfort/Cargo Space

The Crosstrek has ample passenger space for a compact crossover, and its interior is comfortable and relatively quiet, thanks to an innovative acoustic windshield designed to limit road noise. The front seats are height-adjustable and heated on the Premium and Limited trims. Roof rails come standard for carrying gear atop the vehicle, and factory-equipment crossbars can be opted on to handle bicycles, skis, snowboards, kayaks, and whatever else won't fit in the interior cargo space. The Crosstrek can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
